Gary Wilson, the Sunshine Coast Nomads captain, has included a local hero in his dream four ball.
When asked to put together the players he would most like to play with, Wilson plumped for Queensland’s very own “mullet man” Cameron Smith as one of his partners.
“On current form Bryson DeChambeau, due to him being such a powerful and exciting player, would have to be there,’’ Wilson, 55, says.
“Cameron Smith is a great local hero, so he is on the team.
“And Tiger Woods, because he is the greatest player I have seen and was really an enormous influence on my golf when he hit form in the late Nineties and early 2000s.’’
And where would Wilson choose to play?
“Where I live. Pelican Waters. If I chose an overseas course, it would be Red Mountain in Thailand.’’
Wilson, a Nomad for the past five years with 40 games under his belt, was introduced to the club by a former neighbour, Ian Foulis.
“I joined to be able to play all the courses on the Sunshine Coast and then became more involved with the committee,’’ he says. “Now, it’s more about being able to raise funds for the charities we support and our juniors.’’
Wilson’s work-life is hectic. He is the National Account Manager and part of the executive team of a motor insurance-based company which employs about 220 staff.
“I started as a trades assistant and became a Panel Beater by trade,’’ he says.
“I am lucky to live on the Sunshine Coast with my wife Tina. My daughter and her partner also live here on the Coast, and I have a son and two grandchildren in Adelaide,’’ he says.
And what is his greatest claim to fame as a golfer?
“One hole-in-one from 165 metres in 2011,’’ he says. He also casually mentions that he has won a few club championships. Not a bad effort that!
